(File photo)The government plans to hand out 10 billion baht to the poor -- between 1,500 and 3,000 baht each -- mostly in urban areas as a New Year gift. The handouts will be given to poor people who earn less than 100,000 baht a year. The government had previously asked everyone with an annual income of less than 100,000 baht to register with the database. If approved, the combined handouts for both farmers as well as poor people worth 16 billion baht will benefit eight million people.
